Welcome to 6th Grade Math
Welcome to 6th Grade Math! We are lucky to have the unique flexibility of using a creative and hands-on curriculum for our math courses. At PCMS, students will use the Illustrative Mathematics curriculum. Mathematics is a subject of beauty and elegance, exciting in its logic and coherence. It trains the mind to be analytical - providing the foundation for intelligent and precise thinking. Math 6 will help lay the groundwork that will provide students with opportunities to choose among the full range of future career paths. By the end of grade six, the students will develop problem solving strategies and perseverance. They will begin to explain and justify their thinking, and critique the reasoning of others. The students will find patterns and generalize. They will start speaking with mathematical precision. They will be able to use appropriate tools within solving a problem. Lastly they will challenge themselves to find more than one way to an answer. The goal of this class is to focus on the mathematics behind a lesson and to answer the "why" question as opposed to just the correct answer.
In Math Class, students will work cooperatively in study teams to solve challenging mathematical tasks. Homework will be assigned nightly. Group and individual assessments will be given regularly. Students are required to organize and maintain a math folder that will be used in class daily.
